GEO vs SEO: what is the difference and do you need both?

3 min read

SEO (search engine optimization) improves your ranking in classic Google results. GEO (generative engine optimization) makes you cited in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. They share the same technical foundations but target different channels. Most businesses need both, because their customers now search in both places.

What SEO does (and what it does not)

Search engine optimization makes your website appear higher in Google's list of results when someone types a query. Good SEO means Google can crawl and understand your site, your content matches what people search for, and other sites link to you as a credible source. The outcome is a position on a results page, and people choose to click on it or not.

What SEO does not do: it does not help you appear in AI-generated answers. When ChatGPT composes a reply, it does not pull from Google rankings. It reads the web itself. A site that ranks well on Google can still be completely absent from AI answers.

What GEO does differently

Generative engine optimization makes AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) understand, trust, and cite your business. The channel is different: instead of a list of links, the user gets a composed answer with two or three cited sources. If you are not one of them, you are not in the answer at all.

GEO focuses on the signals AI engines weight most heavily: structured data (schema markup) that makes your business machine-readable, content structured to directly answer questions, AI crawler access so the engines can read your site, and entity clarity so the AI knows exactly who you are and what you do.

Where SEO and GEO overlap (the shared foundations)

The good news is that the technical foundations are largely the same. A fast, well-structured website with clear headings, schema markup, and content that actually answers customer questions performs well in both Google rankings and AI citations.

Schema markup is the clearest example. It has always been a Google ranking signal, and it is now the single biggest GEO lever. Doing it well serves both channels at once. The same is true for heading structure, page speed, and content that uses specific, concrete language instead of vague marketing claims.

  • Schema markup (Organization, Service, FAQPage): helps Google and AI engines both.
  • Clean heading structure and a single clear H1: required for both.
  • Content that directly answers questions: both channels reward specificity.
  • Site speed and Core Web Vitals: Google ranking factor, also affects AI crawl efficiency.
  • Clean robots.txt: must allow both Google and AI crawlers.

Which to prioritize if you have limited budget

If your customers search primarily on Google and you have no visibility there at all, fix the SEO foundations first. The technical work (schema, structure, crawlability) directly overlaps with GEO, so you are building for both at once.

If you have decent Google visibility but no AI presence, prioritize GEO work: schema markup, FAQ content, AI crawler access. The foundations you already have for SEO give you a head start.

The honest answer for most businesses: the technical foundations are the same. A studio that does both well charges for one foundation, not two. That is what to look for.

// frequently asked questions

Is SEO becoming less important because of AI search?
Not yet, and probably not for several years. Most search volume still goes through classic Google. AI search is growing fast, but it has not replaced Google for most queries. The businesses that will be best positioned are the ones investing in both now, while many competitors are still only doing SEO.
Can I do GEO without doing SEO?
The technical foundations overlap so heavily that if you do GEO properly, you are doing most of the SEO foundations as well. Schema markup, clean structure, speed, and content quality help both channels. In practice, doing GEO well without SEO is like building a house and forgetting the plumbing, possible in theory, but you are most of the way there anyway.
How do I know if AI engines are citing me now?
Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity a question your business should answer. For example: 'Which web studios do GEO?' or 'Who builds websites with AI visibility?' If your name does not come up, you are not being cited. Our free AI visibility check also tells you which technical factors are blocking you.
